Transporte

Transportation is all the methods people use to move themselves and their goods from one place to another

Transporte

The main aim of transportation is to get people from A to B. However, systems are often a lot more complex than that. They require infrastructure and vehicles, both of which need maintenance.

The choice of transportation can depend on the distance. However, other factors, such as speed, availability, cost, and emissions, influence our decisions.

Common Methods of Transport

In the US, most journeys or shorter distances are taken by road. In many cases, people use their personal vehicles to travel, although this can cause congestion and releases more emissions than other methods. To get around this, some cities and workplaces promote carpooling.

When a personal vehicle isn’t available, or for longer distances, many people choose to travel by bus. The road networks in the US, especially in urban places, are well connected and have relatively good standards.

As the country is vast, air travel is often used for domestic trips. Flights also produce higher emissions than most other methods. On the other hand, they are fast, convenient, and comfortable.

Traveling by train is another option in the US. However, networks aren’t as up-to-date as they could be, meaning that people need to change trains often and journeys are long. High-speed rail could improve comfort, convenience, and journey times. In urban environments, subways and rail links provide efficient ways to travel while avoiding traffic.

Waterways are another method of transport. It isn’t only an option for coastal states. Those with lakes and rivers also have ferries and water taxis to allow for faster journeys across or along a body of water.

Public Transport

In the US, there are various categories of public transport. Public transport is publicly financed and is either a national or local operation. It falls under the remit of the Department of Transportation.

Public transport includes:

  • Streetcars and trolleys
  • Subways
  • Buses
  • Commuter trains
  • Light rail
  • Monorails and trams
  • Water taxis and ferries
  • Cable cars
  • Vanpool services

The systems employ almost 500,000 people and are provided by around 7,000 different organizations.

Who Benefits From Public Transport?

Everyone can benefit from public transport. It can be used to commute to work, as well as an option for enjoying leisure activities. Public transport means less congestion on the roads than if everyone took their car. It also means fewer emissions. Public transport delivers economic benefits by creating jobs and increasing the value of homes in well-connected areas.

45% of Americans don’t have access to public transport. Networks in rural areas need to be improved, although the solutions that work in cities need to be adapted. Good connections can improve quality of life and solve other issues, such as linking people to existing services.

Speed and Sustainability

Even in areas where good connections already exist, networks need to be updated and maintained. Speed and comfort are more likely to make people choose public transport. High-speed rail links, while costly for infrastructure, could be an investment that helps to connect cities and rural parts of the country.

Sustainability is also a crucial issue. Fuel is expensive, and many are harmful to the environment. It means that finding the most cost-effective modes of transport with low emissions is essential. That way, they’ll be fit for purpose for many years to come.
