Diversity

Diversity is a quality within a population that has been the focus of attention for hundreds of years. The term refers to the existence of different characteristics or situations within a group.

When we speak of diversity in this field, we refer to the variety of characteristics within a given population. This refers to differences in religion, race, ideology, culture, and gender.

However, diversity has become a determining factor when considering society and its rules. Therefore, we must learn about the types of diversity and its importance within the social scheme.

Types of Diversity

In society, when discussing diversity, the first thing that comes to mind is race and culture. Yet, these are not the only points that are taken into account when discussing this topic.

There are many types of diversity, yet, here are the most frequent in a population.

  • Cultural diversity

This type of diversity is linked to the different cultures that coexist within a given space. Usually, each country has a standard of culture.

This standard is dictated by the one followed by the majority of the population of that place.

However, this has created problems in recent years where others marginalize different groups. That’s why government policies for protecting these groups and educating the masses must be considered.

These policies should not favor minorities but instruct the masses by fostering acceptance.

This group includes racial diversity, customs, religion, and politics. Generally, it can be any cultural characteristic of a group that does not attack or harm others.

  • Sexual diversity

It implies respect and free choice of the sexual orientation of each citizen. This should make it clear that each individual can choose their sexual tendency and preferences as long as it is consensual.

Good diversity of this kind should provide equality and acceptance. This fact allows individuals to exercise their rights without feeling segregated.

  • Functional diversity

This includes respecting and including individuals with different motor or mental abilities. The intention is to include these individuals within society and provide them with a space for their development by replacing the term “disability” with a less exclusive one.

Importance of diversity in a society

A good acceptance of diversity in a population brings about exponential growth on the part of its members. The acceptance of the customs and values of each individual allows them to function better.

Also, it allows them to provide more development and help to a group with which they feel accepted.

The coexistence of all groups, regardless of their cultural background, should be based on respect and acceptance. To this end, governments must provide policies that assert their rights and defend them.

These policies should state the rights of these groups and include them in the responsibilities of society.

Finally, such policies must be equal under all aspects of the law. This means that legislators cannot have favoritism over any group.

Lack of equality would end up generating an abuse of power as well as marginalization on the part of other groups.
